Judith Butler: “Hamas, Hezbollah are part of a global Left”
From Radical Archives:
Judith Butler:
I think: Yes, understanding Hamas, Hezbollah as social movements that are progressive, that are on the Left, that are part of a global Left, is extremely important. That does not stop us from being critical of certain dimensions of both movements. It doesn’t stop those of us who are interested in non-violent politics from raising the question of whether there are other options besides violence. So again, a critical, important engagement. I mean, I certainly think it should be entered into the conversation on the Left. I similarly think boycotts and divestment procedures are, again, an essential component of any resistance movement.

I am really shocked. I have to say this. Judith Butler was to this day in my eyes a serious philosopher who made very strong contributions to philosophy and gender studies, but this is unbearable.
Hamas and Hizbollah are part of a left movement? If this is true, I am no left anymore. I do not want to be part of any movement whose purpose it is to join ruthless killers like Hamas or Hizbollah.
It really hurts me and makes me angry, that a world known feminist is really talkin such rubbish. Hamas and Hizbollah are doing everything to directly oppress and shorten woman’s rights in every possible way they can. But I remember that she is not the only one. In trotzkist organisations I met “feminists” like her before, absolutley convinced of Hizbollahs bravehearted spirit and resistance against zionist oppression.
I am really shocked and troubled and sad. I haven’t thaught that this is possible.

Yeah, exactly. These statements are clearly *not* wise statements to make.
To say the least.

The problem here is that *The Jewish Homeland really is a racist, murderous “settler State”. Hamas and Hezbollah really are fighting for what Nelson Mandela called “The moral cause of our time” (Palestinian freedom). Judith Butler is just one of many esteemed advocates against oppression taking a moral stand now against Israel. The blinders have come off for a lot of former defenders of the country. And, the “anti-Semite!” and “What about the Sudan?” arguments are played out.

Hamas and Hezbollah are fighting for Palestinian freedom, huh? Thanks for the update. When did they change their programs?

If I understand Harvey Cohen correctly, I think what he means to say is that Hamas and Hezbollah are fighting for the freedom of an abstraction called the Palestinian nation.
The freedom of the actual human beings called Palestinians does not enter the picture.

Hmm. Then Hamas really needs to update the charter, because the pan-Arab and Muslim nationalism inherited from the Muslim Brotherhood, with the holy war rhetoric against the Jews and “the West” really overshadows any talk even about a Palestinian nation.
