Jedwabne monument to murdered Jews defaced with swastikas
The Warsaw Voice | September 1, 2011
Vandals daubed Nazi swastikas and SS signs on a monument in the town of Jedwabne, eastern Poland, which commemorates the mass killing of Jews burned alive by their Polish neighbors during World War II.
Police said vandals also daubed “No apology for Jedwabne” and “They were highly inflammable” around the monument, and painted over inscriptions in Polish and Hebrew.
Jedwabne was the site of a mass killing on July 10, 1941 during the German occupation of Poland. Hundreds of Jews were rounded up, imprisoned in a barn and burned alive by their Polish neighbors.
The case caused shock in Poland when it was revealed in a book by historian Jan Tomasz Gross in 2000, prompting fierce debate about the extent to which Poles persecuted Jews during World War II.
